Westerner Call to Loyalty

"Westerners, put on your chaps,

Buckle on your spurs,

Loosen up the reins of our old fighting Westerners.

Sportsmanship, then victory is the motto of our high,

Come along, you brave old Westerners, we will do or die.

We will gallop over all the sweeping prairie land,

We will fight for black and gold, true Westerner brand.

Lubbock High in golden letters, we will glorify,

Come along, you brave old Westerners; we will do or die"

Found ur web site while on Google looking for info about Lubbock when I lived there in the late 40's and early 50's. Moved to El Paso in early 1952. Never made it to LHS. Found some pixs of old friends. Did check out the 55 year book on Classmates. You have a really good web site. Better than the 55 of Austin (El Paso) high. I think maybe the web site is gone but will send comments anyway.

The Buddy Holly album "Buddy Holly Not Fade Away: The Complete Studio Recordings and More" has been nominated for the Best Historical Album for the 53rd Grammy Awards on February 13, 2011. My husband, John of The Picks is singing backup vocals with Buddy on 9 of the songs.

The reunion was fabulous from start to finish. My thanks to those who worked hard to make it so. Our vote is 3 years. My hubby enjoyed it almost as much as I did, and he is five years older than most of us. Blessings on all who attended, and I truly encourage any classmates who could not be there to try to attend the next one. Joann Pollard Schoen

My husband and I had more fun at this reunion that any of the last ones. I thought the "visitation times" were great; more important to us than programs in the past. My vote is another in 3 years. Blessings to all those in attendance, and we missed those who were not with us. Cheers, Joann

This is a wonderful site. Wish you could do one for Monterey (Lubbock) Class of '56. The internet is the ONLY U.S.A. news source on this French island. Julia and I will be sailing south to Trinidad, W.I. next week to get out of the coming summer hurricane zone.

I just have to brag about the class of '55. It is so wonderful in these later years to be able to retrace the childhood experiences we all remember. Our luncheons are spectacular. Those who miss them, just don't know what a blessing they are missing. From what I can hear, there are very few classes anywhere that make the effort to continue those relationships. I am so very thankful for those who worked diligently to make this happen. (you know who you are). Our newsletters are really something I look forward to. If you haven't joined a group yet, please do so. You will be glad you did.

February 17, 2008 Last evening Joni Wimberley made contact to inform me of the www.lhs55.org website. I am most appreciative for her research. Between my Junior and Senior years, my family moved to Milwaukee, WI. I graduated from West Allis Central in 1955. My life in Lubbock were some very good years. Entering the 6th grade at J.T.Hutchinson Jr. High and attending LHS through 1954 resulted in my knowing some very fine people and having some good times. Being a member of both Hutchinson and LHS Bands brought some interesting events including marching at the New Years Day Cotton Bowl. It is sad to learn of those classmates who have passed on. I met my lovely wife Betty in Milwaukee at Church. She was originally from Alabama. We will be celebrating our 50th Anniversity in August. We have three children and six grandchildren. This is an outstanding website. I hope to make contact with past acquaintances.

My husband, John, was inducted into the 2007 New Mexico Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Albuquerque, NM on November 10, 2007 for vocal work he and his trio, "The Picks" did at the Norman Petty Recording Studios in Clovis, NM in 1957 for Buddy Holly and The Crickets. They did 9 songs with Buddy on "The Chirping Crickets" album. They also did songs with Niki Sullivan and various other artists before we moved to Corpus Christi, Texas for John to go to work as a geologist. We enjoyed driving through Lubbock on the way to and from Albuquerque. We moved away from Lubbock in 1957.

Thank you to everyone who knew and loved my Mom, Mary Lou Sherrill. You know we appreciated all the prayers and encouraging cards, phone calls and wonderful words about Mom, that reminded us what my parents meant to lots of you. Mom went to be with Jesus on Oct 28 and we had her "Celebration of Life" on Oct. 31--We have a new reason for halloween-we claim it for us. Infact, the kids all went out and trick and treated that night. Mom would have wanted it and loved it. Life goes on and we must live each day to the fullest-to be ready ourselves. We were blessed to have Mom for 92 years(Aug.) May we all be blessed to b! e part og our childrens' and friends lives as long. May God Bless Each One of You. Love in Christ, Sandra Sherrill Hammitt

Joni, You are doing a great job of keeping all of the class of '55 informed about so many things. I am looking forward to our 55th Reunion. Thanks for letting everyone know about Joe Cox. I remember Joe playing linebacker against Amarillo in '54. We ran a special "Stunt" and Joe recovered the blocked fieldgoal. We lost, but it was a great game. Lets all let him know how much we think of him.

My father is Sam H. Scroggins, Jr. He passed away on October 23, 2006. My father spoke of many friends that he remembered from his highschool days. In his last days, so many from the Class of 55 called him and sent cards to cheer him up. Thank you so much for your support and thoughtfulness. There is a Memorial Fund set up through Wells Fargo Bank in Lubbock to help pay for funeral arrangements. Any contribution to this fund would be greatly appreciated by the family. Thank you... John and I are still doing some work with 2 Internet web sites: www.buddyhollyandthepicks.com and www.pickrecords.com/palcon.html. Look for John on the soon-to-be-released (June, 2005) worldwide DVD and CD out of London "The Music of Buddy Holly and The Crickets - The Definitive Story."

A great idea and a good look! Thanks for taking the time and effort to do this!

It is distracting, however, to have to scroll left and right in order to read a complete line of text due to the "LHS 1955" information that is permanently set on the left side of the screen. Do I need to do something to get rid of it, or minimize it so I can read all of the text in one swoop?

I love it!!! Especially the addition of the names to the pictures. What fun to look at the pictures and remember what a GRAND time we had. Can hardly wait until 2005. Thanks for all of your hard work.

What I am seeing looks great. On the suggestion to have a 2 1/2 year get together for a picnic or cruise; I suppose that some of the classmates have been very successful, but I feel that many would fit into my catagory as for the cruise. There is no way that I could afford it.
